Kitchen Island Spacing Tips for your General Contractor – #2

admin November 5, 2014 General Contractor

In my last segment I started discussing tips to help people design and build a kitchen Island with their general contractor. In today’s segment I would like to share some spacing tips. So when your general contractor, kitchen remodeling team and engineer ask you how much space you want between your kitchen island and the other parts of your kitchen and dining room you will be prepared and be able to make a proper decision. This type of planning is tougher when you have less space available which is the case in my hometown of Queens, which over the east river of Manhattan.

Distance from dining room:

Your kitchen Island often will serve as a buffet table and an extra base for hosting meals. Having your dining room table too close will throw 2 rectangular objects in a close proximity to one another. This can actually look very ugly. The answer to this problem is to plan for a circular table. A circle and rectangle look pretty sweet together. This is actually the way my kitchen island is set up. All kitchen Island that I have heard of are rectangular and some people just never noticed how well a circular dining room table looks next to it. When I say next to it, I mean a minimum of 3-4 feet of spacing between them. If your home is big enough  (which is rare in areas like Manhattan and parts of Queens) then of course you can set your kitchen island much farther away. However, I would not reccomend you set it to far away because you will lose the luxury of using your kitchen island as a convenient buffet table and base for meal hosting. I hope I was able to help you brainstorm on how to set up your kitchen island in relation to your dining room. In my next segment I will discuss kitchen island space planning in regards to the rest of your kitchen, refrigerator, and more. Stay tuned as New Age Global Builders aims to please.
